East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet.
- Rudyard Kipling
Things are not what they seem; or, to be more accurate, they are not only what they seem, but very much else besides.
- Aldous Huxley
Although Kipling's statement makes sense when we think of the dichotomies of an Eastern and Western world (they are different in all aspects), human expression and the striving to dissolve boundaries will continue to bring about evidence that the two do indeed belong to one physical plane, if only in the form of culture. Some examples of the magic that results when people attempt to articulate their own sense of the union of East and West into one product that is uniquely the experience of its creator:
Harry Manx and Kevin Breit, "Death Have Mercy
Paul Butterfield Blues Band, "East West" Part I
Paul Butterfield Blues Band, "East West" Part II
I heard recently that Tibetans never thought to climb Mt. Everest (or any other high peak) until Westerners came with their lust for conquest in the natural world.
